And then we climbed the highest mountain in Texas. From Van Horn we drive through relatively flat landscapes and then we see the Massif of the Guadelupe Mountains from a big distance. Very very impressive. We arrive in the beautiful National Park in the early afternoon and the weather is just perfect. We decide to climb the Guadelupe Peak right away. The first and last quarters are quite steep and exhausting and we only meet a couple of people. The landscape changes after each „curve“ and the view from the summit (8,750 feet) is simply breathtaking. A great hike that definitely made it onto our Top list.

After 2 nights in the Guadalupe National Park and some more hikes, we wake up in the morning and see snow … not exactly what we expected in Texas. We drive a bit further north, come to our 14th state New Mexico and visit the Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Unfortunately the „natural entrance“ is closed due to the bad weather and so we take the elevator from the Visitor Center at the altitude of 4,406 feet about 820 feet lower, towards the center of the earth. At first, I (Sandie) wasn’t that excited about the caves because I often feel a little claustrophobia. But it is not narrow at all in this huge cave system. We are TOTALLY impressed and are also very happy that very few people are around. The caves are illuminated very decent, so it is not like Walt Disney at all. The large and many different stalactites, stalagmites and sculptures are simply beautiful and do not need any „special effects“. Worth a visit and since we have the annual pass for the National Parks, entry is free.

GROSSARTIG.

We then drive through a landscape, which is quite dirty and somehow destroyed by the oil industry. We arrive in Artesia in the Southeast of New Mexico. Here it is snowing more and more and we see on Google maps that there is a parking space outside of the municipal Airport. We want to stay there. However, we are stopped by a turnpike and a friendly security guard. He says we can’t go in, but we can stay on the gravel road next to the entrance. The night is very calm and the next day the guards greet us and wish us a nice day and „safe travels“. GREAT.

The sun is shining again, but since they expect snowstorms in the mountains which we have to cross on our way West, we reschedule a bit. We drive to Roswell, which is known for Aliens. We think it maybe could be interesting. But it is not really – we are pretty disappointed. The city is terribly run down and is dominated by pawn shops, liquor stores and many shops that are closed forever. Not nice. So we quickly get away and cross, the very beautiful, Sacramento Mountains in the Sierra Blanca and arrive in Alamogordo.

Alamogordo is a quiet and friendly town and we feel very comfortable here. We spend the night at the Family Recreation Center and also take a loooooooong shower here. From here we go to the sand dune area of White Sands. From a distance, this desert doesn’t look very impressive. However, when we come closer and drive along it for miles we are quite impressed. It is huge, it just doesn’t have very high dunes. We particularly like walking barefoot through the white sand and seeing the snow covered mountains in the distance at the same time.

We spend the next few days in the fantastic Organ Mountains. We also take several hikes here, whereby we especially like the Indian Hollow Trail. This trail is only 7 miles long but very demanding and wild with wonderful views. The second night it gets very windy. We already have had some strong winds but these gusts are almost stronger than the gusts we had in our Canadian hurricane.

Our next destination is the State Park „City of Rocks“. You register here at the ranger station, pay a few dollars and then look for a place to stay between the funny climbing rocks. And how nice – Michaela and Peter are staying with us in the same place. We spend a few nice days with BBQ, running, walking, playing and talking. In the evenings we enjoy the campfire. Always awesome!

Einfach TOLL.

However, our paths separate again after a few days, and we move further West to our 15th state Arizona to our first hot springs on this trip. We soak ourselves in the hot wells a couple times for one to two hours. It feels so great and the water never gets cold because the tubs are always fed with 104 degree water. Wonderful and all in a beautiful desert-like landscape. Ewald is also happy because he is kept in a species-appropriate manner in the sand. On our exploration tours we see that nature is coming back to life – you can see the beginning of the bloom everywhere. Just great.

We feel wonderfully clean and gentle and we continue to Tombstone. This western town is quite touristy but luckily there is not too much going on. The city became famous through a wild gunfight in 1881. Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday fought against several cattle thief at the O.K. Corral. Over 30 shots were fired in less than 30 seconds. They show the „gunfight“ several times a day in several venues. We are not so interested in the gun shows, but we enjoy the cowboy flair and the really worth seeing saloons. We walk a bit through the city, visit the Art Gallery with its delightful quilt exhibition and hospitable ladies and enjoy delicious fried food on the balcony of a saloon. In the evening we drink margaritas and eat deserts with probably the highest amount of calories ever. One is called „Death by chocolate“ and believe us … death was probably not far away. However, it was also incredibly delicious.

We continue towards Tucson, Arizona. East of the city we stay at the Colossal Cave Mountains. We did not think that the cave was so colossal. It was rather cramped and stuffy due to the group tours with 30 people. But the SAGUAROS are colossal. These great cacti just did it for us. Sooooo huge and majestic. It takes about 70 years to develop the first arms, they can store up to 200 gallons of water and they grow up to 50 feet high. And so many different forms … we cannot get enough of them and we cannot believe how many Saguaros there are in the area.

After visiting the PIMA Air Museum, with its more than 200 aircrafts, from the smallest aircraft in the world to the Boeing Dreamliner prototype, we continue to the western part of the Saguaro National Park. Here we enjoy again the landscape with an almost limitless number of saguaros. From there we continue to Picacho Peak State Park. This imposing mountain is just off Interstate 10 and the night in the State Park is not that quiet. However, by climbing the summit we are more than satisfied. Our route via the Sunset Trail leads on the side facing away from the road through wonderful landscapes with many saguaros towards the summit. The last half mile is really tough. It almost goes vertically upwards, secured by ropes, with more or less breathtaking views. We are challenged and we are enthusiastic. This hike also makes it onto our Top list.

The next day we drive near Phoenix and meet Claudia and Thomas with their Duro at the Lost Dutchman State Park. We haven’t seen each other since the end of October and we are very happy. On our first evening together, we decide to hike a little the next day. The hike starts out very gently. It leads us through a canyon to a waterfall AND then it becomes very, very exciting and very, very challenging. On the remaining 2.5 miles we cope with 2,630 feet altitude and it is mostly climbing and this time completely unsecured. This “hike” or rather say “climb” and the associated “Flatiron” summit can definitely be found in the Top 3 of our Top list. Simply indescribable! Back at Ewald we enjoy our homemade pizza.

After 2 days we say Goodbye to Claudia and Thomas and do a few things in Phoenix, like our laundry and some shopping. In the afternoon we drive to the Skyline Regional County Park and are TOTALLY excited about the skyline (mountains and saguaros).

Sehr coole Gegend.

Next we go to Quartzsite, a small town in southwest Arizona. This city is known for its gemstone faires AND for the huge number of snowbirds that come here every winter. The hundreds of thousands of snowbirds stay on a large number of free spaces (BLM) around Quartzsite or on one of the countless RV resorts. All possible motorhomes can be seen here, from the converted school bus to the very expensive A-class motorhomes. However, we have the feeling, we can see more old hippies here than anywhere else. Very cool area.

Overall, we can say that we really like Arizona and New Mexico a lot, not least because of the warm and dry climate. The landscapes are beautiful and sometimes very barren and lonely. The sports opportunities, which are very important to us, are great. We particularly notice how clean and well-kept everything is here. No garbage can be seen even on the BLM estates, where a large number of campers (free and legal) can park for up to 14 days. Even the rest areas, which are not privately managed like in Europe, are characterized by their beautiful picnic areas and the toilet houses and are incredibly well-kept and clean. Great! We wish the public places in Germany would be treated with such care!

We will arrive in California pretty soon. Our next destinations there will be the Mojave Desert and Death Valley. We are excited and looking forward …  you will hear from us soon!
