Unsere Reise hat sich seit unserem letztem Bericht deutlich verlangsamt und wir bleiben oft länger als normalerweise an einem Ort stehen. Es fühlt sich im Moment wie Urlaub an, da wir hier in Florida sogar teilweise schon die nächsten Plätze im Voraus buchen. Das ist hier im etwas überfüllten Süden jedoch auch notwendig, da es kaum Möglichkeiten zum Freistehen gibt und wir natürlich auch die schönen Stateparks besuchen wollen. 

Our journey has significantly slowed down since our last report, and we often stay in one place for longer than usual. It feels like a vacation at the moment and because we are in Florida we even book the next places in advance. However, this is necessary because there are a lot of „Snowbirds“ here and it is crowded.

Vor etwa vier Wochen haben wir im Regen (das war das letzte mal bis heute, dass es geregnet hat) das fantastische Santee Coastal Reserve in South Carolina verlassen. Wir haben zu Viert mit Michaela und Peter die Einladung von Peter und Helena angenommen und sind zu deren fantastischem Anwesen in Mount Pleasant gefahren. Hier bekommen wir das Gästehaus (!) Zur Verfügung gestellt und werden unfassbar verwöhnt. Wir besuchen Charleston zum zweiten Mal und dürfen einer für uns ungewöhnlichen Predigt bei den Uniterians beiwohnen. Eine Religion, bei der es nicht um Gott oder Jesus sondern um jeden einzelnen Menschen geht. Es wird jeder, unabhängig von Rasse, Sexualität und Stellung beachtet und geachtet. Wir haben mal die Glaubensgrundsätze fotografiert, diese haben uns schon beeindruckt. Wir drei Mädchen waren zusammen die Plantage „Boon Hall“ besuchen. Diese befindet sich gegenüber von Helena und Peters Haus auf der anderen Seite des Flusses. Auf Boon Hall wurden früher sowohl Indigo, Baumwolle und Pecannüsse angebaut, als auch Backsteine hergestellt. Bekannt wurde es aber vor Allem durch den Mehrteiler „Fackeln im Sturm“,  der hier gedreht wurde. 

About four weeks ago we left the fantastic Santee Coastal Reserve in South Carolina in the rain (that was the last time it rained until today). The four of us, we, Michaela and Peter, followed the invitation from Peter and Helena and drove to their fantastic property in Mount Pleasant. We were allowed to use the guest house (!) and we were unbelievably spoiled by these wonderful people. We visit Charleston for the second time and are able to attend an unusual sermon with the Uniterians. A religion that is not about God or Jesus but about every single person. Everyone is respected, regardless of race, sexuality or position. We took a photo of their principles, they impressed us. The three girls of us went to visit the plantation Boon hall. This is located right across from Helena and Peter’s house on the other side of the river. Boon hall used to grow indigo, cotton and pecan nuts and also had a famous brick production. But nowadays it became known mainly through the series „North and South“, which was filmed here.

Nach wunderbaren und emotionalen Tagen verabschieden wir uns von allen Vieren und ziehen weiter in Richtung Süden. Wir fahren in die Nähe von Beaufort, wo wir wieder eine ruhig gelegene Bootsrampe am Combahee River finden. Das kleine Städtchen Beaufort hat uns ganz besonders gut gefallen – sowohl die historische Altstadt mit ihren herrlichen Villen, als auch das leckere Eis. Und ganz nebenbei … das Wetter ist mittlerweile perfekt. 

After wonderful and emotional days, we say goodbye to all four and move on south. We drive near to Beaufort, where we again find a quiet boat ramp on the Combahee River. We especially enjoyed the small town of Beaufort – the historic old town with its beautiful villas, as well as the delicious ice cream. And by the way … the weather is perfect by now.

Es geht weiter nach Savannah und somit sind wir in unserem mittlerweile 7. Bundesstaat Georgia gelandet. Savannah ist eine pulsierende, historische und spannende und eigentlich gar nicht hektische Stadt. Wir laufen Kreuz und quer, bestaunen das künstlerische Ambiente und genießen ein leckeres Fischgericht in einer der vielen Oyster-Bars. Ein toller Tag in einer schönen Stadt. Am nächsten Morgen besuchen wir noch eine Weihnachtsmesse, was sollen wir sagen, die Geschmäcker sind zum Glück sehr unterschiedlich. 😂 

We continue towards Savannah and thus we meanwhile landed in our 7th state, which is Georgia. Savannah is a vibrant, historic, exciting and not at all hectic city. We criss-cross the old town, admire the artistic ambience and enjoy a delicious fish dish in one of the many oyster bars. A great day in a beautiful city. The next morning we visit a Christmas fair, what can we say, the tastes are fortunately very different. 😂

Als nächstes verschlägt es uns auf eine der „Golden Isles“. Jekyll Island ist sicherlich eine unserer Highlights in den USA. Diese Insel ist in weiten Teilen völlig naturbelassen, es gibt ein paar Hotels und dann noch den „Historic District“. Hier befinden sich die alten Wochenendhäuser der Reichen und Superreichen, wie Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, Vanderbilt etc.. Diese Häuser sind jetzt im Eigentum des Staates Georgia und werden für private Events vermietet. Wir haben die Tage mit Radfahren und Strandläufen sehr genossen und besonders beeindruckt hat uns der „Driftwood Beach“. 

After we leave Savannah, we go to one of the „Golden Isles“ of Geogia. Jekyll Island is certainly one of our highlights in the US so far. This island is very natural in large areas, there are a few hotels and then the „Historic District“. Here you find the old „cottages“ of the rich and super rich, such as Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, Vanderbilt etc. built in the early 20th century. These homes are now owned by the state of Georgia and you can rent them for private events. We enjoyed the days with cycling and beach runs and we were very impressed by the „Driftwood Beach“.

Und dann erreichen wir Florida. Es ist jetzt durchgehend sehr warm, so wie es sich für den Sonnenstaat gehört. Unsere erste Nacht verbringen wir am Strand in der Nähe von Jacksonville. Von hier aus wollen wir zunächst einmal an die Westküste von Florida wechseln und auf dem Weg dorthin bleiben wir einen Tag im Ocala National Forest. Es ist schön ruhig hier – nur das Radfahren ist auf den sehr sandigen Wegen mehr als beschwerlich. Aber wer sein Fahrrad liebt …

And then we are in Florida. It is now very warm, but that is the way it should be in the so called „sunshine state“. We spend our first night on the beach near Jacksonville. From here we want to go to the west coast of Florida and on the way there we stay one day in the Ocala National Forest. It is nice and quiet here – only cycling on the very sandy paths is more than difficult. But if you love your bike you can also push it.

Dann erreichen wir Crystal River und hier werden wir einige Tage sowohl in der Stadt als auch an den vorgelagerten Flussmündungen und Buchten bleiben. Es ist herrlich, Sonnenschein, warmes Wasser und fantastische Sonnenuntergänge. Es ist schon fast zu kitschig. Hier erleben wir dann einen echten Höhepunkt unserer bisherigen Reise: wir schnorcheln mit den unglaublich großen, friedfertigen und in unseren Augen sehr goldigen MANATEES. Es war ein unfassbar schönes und ergreifendes Erlebnis. Ganz nebenbei haben wir uns dann auf der Tour auch sehr mit dem Kajakfahren angefreundet. 

We arrive in Crystal River and here we will spend a few days in the city, in the coastal area and at the bays. It’s gorgeous, sunshine, warm water and fantastic sunsets. It’s almost too kitchy. Here we experience a real highlight: we snorkel with the incredibly large, peaceful and in our eyes very cute MANATEES. It was an incredibly beautiful and touching experience. By the way, it was our first tour with kayaks and we really enjoyed going in these comfortable little boats – we like them more than canoes.

Wir waren noch über Thanksgiving bei Chrystal River und haben sogar von Fremden, mittels Instagram und Zettel, Einladungen für den hier in den USA so wichtigen Feiertag bekommen. Ist das nicht toll? Wir fragen uns immer wieder, ob uns sowas in Deutschland auch passieren könnte – wir sind uns nicht sicher. Sogar die Polizisten und Sheriffs sind sehr nett zu uns. Keiner will uns verjagen, meist sind sie nur neugierig wegen Ewald. 

On Thanksgiving we are still in the Chrystal River area and we received invitations from strangers, via Instagram and a little letter. Isn’t that great? We keep asking ourselves whether something like this could happen to us in Germany – we are not shure. Even the police and sheriffs are very nice to us. Nobody wants to chase us away, mostly they are just curious about Ewald.

Nach unserem „Kurzurlaub“ in der Chrystal River Gegend geht es wieder Richtung Osten. Wieder übernachten wir im Ocala National Forest und treffen dort einige Hillbillies. Wir unterhalten uns sehr nett, dürfen in einem wunderschönen Peterbilt 359 sitzen und sind immer wieder über bestimmte Meinungen und Weltanschauungen erstaunt. Wie beispielsweise, dass noch mehr Waffen für noch mehr Sicherheit sorgen … um noch eine der harmloseren Meinungen zu erwähnen. Grundsätzlich vermeiden wir es jedoch weitestgehend, gerade hier im Süden, über Politik zu sprechen. Ist manchmal sehr schockierend und oft unfassbar. 

After our „short break“ in the Chrystal River area, we head east again. Again we stay in the Ocala National Forest and meet some hillbillies there. We talk very nicely, are allowed to sit in a beautiful Peterbilt 359 and are always amazed by certain opinions and beliefs. For example, that more weapons provide even more security … just to mention one of the more innocent opinions. However, we mostly avoid talking about politics, especially here in the South. It is sometimes very shocking and often unbelievable.

Wir machen jetzt auch unsere ersten Begegnungen mit den No-See-Ums. Die sind einfach blöd aber dazu später mehr. Zurück an der Ostküste treffen wir uns bei Ormond Beach im Tomoka State Park mit Michaela und Peter. Wir wollen uns zusammen den am 4.12. geplanten Raketenstart einer SpaceX-Rakete anschauen. Wir fahren viel Fahrrad, kochen zusammen und sitzen abends lange am Lagerfeuer. Jeden Abend besuchen uns Waschbären, die wollen wohl auch gerne am Lagerfeuer sitzen oder einfach nur einen Happen von unserem leckeren Essen abhaben. 

We are having our first encounters with the No-See-Ums. They are just stupid but more on that later. Back on the East Coast we meet up with Michaela and Peter again at Ormond Beach in Tomoka State Park. We want to watch the planned rocket launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket together. We go bicycling al lot, cook together and in the evenings we enjoy our campfires. Every evening, raccoons visit us, they probably want to sit around the campfire or just have a bite of our delicious food.

Am Tag des Raketenstartes begeben wir uns zeitig nach Titusville und positionieren uns am Strand. Wir sind uns alle etwas unschlüssig, von welcher Startplattform es losgeht und während wir noch rätseln, erfahren wir, dass der Start auf den nächsten Tag verschoben wurde. Am nächsten Tag besuchen wir das Kennedy Space Center und erleben dann sozusagen den Start hautnah. WAS für ein geiles Erlebnis. Und überhaupt, ein Besuch des KSC ist mehr als lohnenswert. Das Ganze ist in einem riesigen Naturreservat. Schätzungsweise 5.000 Alligatoren leben auf dem Gelände und einer davon hat sich den Start der Rakete direkt bei uns angeschaut. Es war vergleichsweise leer in dem Park, vermutlich war es am Tag vorher wesentlich voller. Eine Mitarbeiterin sagte, dass sie es noch nie so leer erlebt habe. Wir mussten nie anstehen und hatten viele Attraktionen fast für uns. 

On the day of the rocket launch, we head to Titusville and position ourselves on the beach right across from Cape Canaveral. We are all a bit confused because we do not know which launch pad is the right one. While we are still racking our brains, we hear from others that the start is postponed to the next day. The next day we visit the Kennedy Space Center and here we have a great view at the launch pad.. WHAT a great experience. And anyway, a visit to the KSC is more than worthwhile. It is located in a huge nature reserve. About 5,000 alligators live here and one of them also watched the launch right in front of us. It was quite empty in the park, probably it was much fuller the day before. One employee said that she had never experienced it so empty. We never had to stand in line and had many attractions almost for ourselves.

Jetzt beginnt unser „Badeurlaub“. Am „Hangar Beach“ schwimmen wir das erste mal seit längerer Zeit mal wieder richtig im Atlantik. Das Wasser ist gar nicht so kalt und einfach sehr einladend. Von hier fahren wir zu Tony. Wir sind jetzt bei „Boondockers Welcome“ angemeldet und Tony ist unser erster Host. Er hat ein riesiges Grundstück und von hier aus fahren wir mit den Rädern zum Strand. Leider ist der Strand in Teilen sehr zugebaut, von sehr vielen Hotels und Appartementhäusern, das ist manchmal schon eine echte Verschandelung der Landschaft. 

Now our „beach holiday“ begins. At „Hangar Beach“ we swim for the first time (since a long time) in the Atlantic Ocean. The water is not that cold and just very inviting. From here we drive to Tony in Melbourne. We are now logged in to the App „Boondockers Welcome“ and Tony is our first host. He has a huge property and from here we bycicle to the beach and do some shopping.

Jetzt stehen wir seit ein paar Tagen auf einer Barriereinsel vor Sebastian, 250 km nördlich von Miami. Es ist schön hier und der Strand ist zum Glück nicht so zugebaut, nicht zuletzt auch aufgrund des State Parks. Leider werden wir hier sehr von den kleinen No-See-Ums, beziehungsweise von ihren Stichen gequält. Wir beide zusammen haben grob geschätzt um die 500 Stiche. Aber man sieht diese Biester kaum und weiß nie genau, wo, wann und wie sie einem erwischen. Deshalb sind wir uns noch unsicher, ob wir es in die Everglades wagen sollen. Wir haben schonmal 2 Mückennetze auf Blackfly-Netze umgerüstet. Die sind enger gewebt und somit kommen die kleinen Viecher nicht mehr so gut durch. Wir tasten uns morgen mal langsam weiter in den Süden vor. Wir denken, dass wir noch bis nach Weihnachten in Florida sind und uns dann Richtung Westen bewegen. 

Since a few days we are on a barrier island close to Sebastian, 150 miles north of Miami. It’s nice here and luckily and since we are in a State Park the beach is very natural. Unfortunately, we are tortured here by the small No-See-Ums, or let’s say by their stitches. Together we have roughly estimated around 500 stitches. But you hardly see these beasts and you never know where, when and how they get you. Therefore, we are still unsure whether we should venture into the Everglades. We have converted 2 of our mosquito nets to Blackfly nets. They are woven closer and thus the little critters hopefully do not come through. We will head slowly to the south tomorrow. We think we’ll stay a little longer in Florida and after Christmas we will head west.

Florida ist sicherlich wundervoll. Das Wichtigste zuerst – es ist herrlich warm und selbst wenn es mal regnet (wie heute) ist es warmer Regen. Wunderschön sind die Strände, kilometerlang und erstaunlich, um nicht zu sagen, unfassbar leer. Wir gehen fast täglich in dem herrlichen blauen Atlantik baden und erleben Brandungen, die einfach umwerfend sind 😊. Unser Leben spielt sich derzeit fast komplett im Freien ab. Alles super, WENN, ja wenn da nicht die super nervigen No-See-Ums wären. Diese mikrokleinen fast unsichtbaren Mücken sind unfassbar fies und wir sind beide mit Stichen übersät. UND diese Stiche jucken wahnsinnig und das wohl locker 2 Wochen lang. Das ist halt die Kehrseite an diesem Paradies. Nach dem ersten Angriff dieser Killer haben wir sogar überlegt, sofort Wieder in den Norden zu fahren, jetzt wollen wir aber doch noch ein wenig ausharren und auch die Keys gerne erkunden. Schauen wir mal … 

Florida is wonderful. The most important thing first – it is fantastic warm and even when it rains (like today) it is warm rain. The beaches are beautiful, miles long and incredibly empty. We swim almost every day in the beautiful blue Atlantic Ocean and experience waves which are simply staggering 😊. Everything is great, IF, yes if there were no super stupid No-See-Ums. These micro-tiny, almost invisible mosquitoes are incredibly nasty and we’re both covered with stings. AND these stitches itch madly and we heard they itch for 2 weeks. That’s just the other side of this paradise. After the killer’s first attack, we even considered going back North again, but now we want to hang out a bit and explore the Keys as well. We’ll see …
